Law and Public Safety


Course Philosophy:

Students today are interested in careers in law enforcement, forensics, homeland security, investigations, corrections, firefighting and emergency medical services to name just a few. The Law and Public Safety program provides all this and more! The goal is to equip students with the knowledge, values and skills needed to become successful in a Public Safety career. The course will start with the foundation of ethics, professionalism and integrity.


Course Description:

The Law and Public Safety Program is a 2 year program that is available for students 10th through 12th grade. Students that complete the course objectives set by the Mississippi State Department of Education will receive 2 credits per year. The Law and Public Safety Program is designed to engage students in studying four major areas in the public safety arena. The areas covered are Law Enforcement, Fire Protection Services, Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and Military. The course will focus on the history, structure, technological evolution and current issues in these areas. Each learning experience will require students to be active participants, critical thinkers and effective communicators.

Students will receive hands on training in self-defense, crime scene investigation, traffic stop procedures, rescue operations, building searches, and use of force scenarios. Additionally, students will learn about workplace skills and will have relevant job-shadowing experiences with professionals. Students will also receive national certifications from Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) as well as National Incident Management Systems (NIMS).
